Grand Theft Auto VI
OVERVIEW
Grand Theft Auto VI is Rockstar's seventeenth mainline entry in the series and the seventh set in the HD Universe -- first teased in February 2022, then officially unveiled with its name and first trailer in December 2023. It's set for release on November 19, 2026, after two delays pushed it back from an original Fall 2025 target.
The story follows criminal couple Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos through the state of Leonida, Rockstar's fictional stand-in for Florida, anchored by Vice City. Rockstar has framed their relationship as the emotional core of the game -- a modern, Bonnie-and-Clyde-style partnership that pulls them into a conspiracy stretching across the whole state.
The reveal itself didn't go entirely to plan. Trailer 1 leaked online nearly a full day ahead of its scheduled YouTube premiere in December 2023, forcing Rockstar to move the release up several hours; once live, it pulled in more than 90 million views in its first 24 hours, becoming one of the most-watched YouTube uploads ever at the time. A long quiet stretch followed until May 2025, when Rockstar paired a delay announcement -- pushing the release from Fall 2025 to May 2026 -- with Trailer 2 and a full refresh of the game's website. That second trailer topped 475 million cross-platform views in its first day, and its centerpiece needle-drop, The Pointer Sisters' "Hot Together," reportedly saw its streaming numbers spike by well over 1,000% afterward. A second delay followed in November 2025, landing on the current November 19, 2026 release date, which Rockstar attributed to wanting extra time to polish the game.
Development has also been shadowed by a string of leaks -- most notably a large September 2022 dump of early build footage and screenshots, followed by smaller leaks in December 2023, January 2025, and November 2025. A steady stream of fabricated, AI-generated "leaks" has circulated alongside the real ones, muddying what's actually legitimate. On the flip side, the game has already picked up hardware ahead of its release, winning "Most Anticipated Game" at both The Game Awards 2024 and The Game Awards 2025.
TRIVIA
Lucia Caminos is the series' first voiced female protagonist -- earlier games with women in criminal lead roles kept them silent. The Pricedown logo returns to its old "subtitle" styling for the first time since Grand Theft Auto III. And the reveal of Leonida quietly retcons the scattered "Florida" references dropped in GTA IV and GTA V, folding them into the new state's canon instead of contradicting it.
