State of Leonida
WHAT IS STATE OF LEONIDA?
Leonida is the fictional U.S. state Rockstar built around Vice City for GTA VI, first named in the game's debut trailer and carried through the entire "Only in Leonida" marketing push that followed. Rockstar has even nailed down how it's meant to sound out loud -- "lay-oh-NYE-duh" -- confirmed indirectly through the localized character sets used on the game's Chinese, Japanese, and Korean websites.
The state leans heavily on Florida for its identity: sun-soaked beach towns, a famously busy port, alligator country, and the kind of humid sprawl that's defined the series' Vice City setting since the original 1980s-set game. There's a streak of Georgia mixed in too -- Mount Kalaga National Park's mountains and river valleys, plus a leaked prison complex that closely resembles Georgia's real Augusta State Medical Prison, both point north of the Florida influence.
Leonida's arrival also quietly rewrites series history. Older HD Universe games -- GTA IV and GTA V among them -- dropped a handful of offhand "Florida" references over the years; those now retroactively belong to Leonida instead, folded into the new state's canon rather than contradicting it.
KNOWN COUNTIES
Five counties have surfaced by name so far, each pieced together from trailer footage, road signage, and community mapping: Vice-Dale County (home turf for Vice City itself), Kelly County (anchored by the fading resort town of Port Gellhorn), Leonard County, Ambrosia County (built around the refinery town of Ambrosia), and Mariana County (covering the Leonida Keys and the Grassrivers wetlands).
THE NAME AND THE SEAL
Leonida appears to take its name from Juan Ponce de León, the Spanish conquistador who led the first European expedition into real-world Florida. Its state seal -- visible on Vice-Dale PD's own badge -- depicts a person being snatched by an alligator, a darkly comic riff on the real Seal of Florida.
