Rockstar has stayed characteristically silent on its GTA 6 voice cast, leaving fans to speculate for months based on trailer audio alone. That silence was finally broken from an unexpected direction: veteran actor Stephen Root, speaking to the Associated Press at the BAFTA TV Tea Party in Beverly Hills, confirmed he does appear in the game.
Root, best known as Bill Dauterive from King of the Hill and Milton Waddams from Office Space, said he wasn't surprised the secret got out. "I think from the first rollout of GTA that they were doing almost a year ago they had my character in there, and there were too many people that knew me from King of the Hill and my voice," he told AP. "So, I think that secret kind of got divulged then." He added he's "so happy to be involved" and called the game "an amazing thing to look at."
Per GameSpot, Root plays Brian Heder, a veteran drug smuggler in the Leonida Keys who also happens to be protagonist Jason Duval's landlord, notably one who doesn't charge rent. Brian has his own character profile on the official GTA 6 website, which describes him as still running product through his boatyard alongside his third wife, Lori, while letting other people handle the messier side of the business.
This is worth pausing on because of what it isn't: a leak, a datamine, or an anonymous tip. It's the first time anyone directly tied to the production has gone on record confirming their own casting, which is a notably different situation from the steady drip of unconfirmed rumors that have swirled around GTA 6's cast for the better part of a year. Root himself even acknowledges that his voice was likely recognizable in early trailer footage well before anyone official said a word.
For players tracking the game's story ahead of November 19, Brian's confirmed presence adds weight to the idea that Leonida's supporting cast isn't just background noise. A landlord who's also a smuggler and lets his tenant skip rent sounds like exactly the kind of morally tangled relationship Rockstar tends to build entire side stories around, and having a dedicated profile on the official site suggests Brian is meant to matter beyond a few throwaway lines. Whether more cast members follow Root's lead and start confirming their roles on their own, rather than waiting for Rockstar, is the obvious next thing to watch.
