GTA 6's New Extended Look Debuts on Netflix First, Sparking Fan Backlash

According to GameSpot, Rockstar and Netflix jointly announced that a new "extended look" at GTA 6 will debut on Netflix on August 27, marking the first major look at the game since Trailer 2 dropped over a year ago. The footage will be exclusive to Netflix for six hours before Rockstar posts it to its own YouTube channel at 9 PM ET that same day.

The move has upset a portion of the GTA fanbase, who see requiring a Netflix subscription as an unnecessary barrier to content that could simply be uploaded to YouTube for everyone at once. GameSpot also notes concerns about whether Netflix's servers can handle the expected surge in viewers, pointing to past technical issues during the platform's high-profile live events.

Netflix and Rockstar aren't strangers to collaboration -- several GTA titles have previously been available through Netflix's game subscription service, and Red Dead Redemption remains accessible there now. Netflix described the new deal as part of its push to become a home for "ambitious storytelling... from any medium," reflecting its ongoing efforts to grow its gaming business. The financial terms of the partnership have not been disclosed.

GameSpot frames the Netflix exclusivity as part of a broader pattern of Rockstar and Take-Two looking to maximize revenue around GTA 6, pointing to the game's $80 price tag (up from $60 for GTA 5) and the $100 Ultimate Edition, which includes exclusive extras like access to Sara's Unisex Salon for character customization -- a feature unavailable to standard edition buyers for now. Despite the criticism, GameSpot suggests the Netflix debut will likely still succeed in driving significant traffic to the platform. GTA 6 is currently slated to launch November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
