A massive resurfaced trove of Rockstar files is peeling back years of secrecy around GTA 5's canceled expansions -- and it's forty times larger than the leak that first cracked the door open in 2023.

A new wave of previously leaked Rockstar development files has resurfaced online, and modders are already tearing through it. According to GameSpot, the batch totals roughly 192GB -- dwarfing the approximately 4GB of GTA 5 source code material that first went public in 2023. Modder TJGM has been sifting through the files and has surfaced cut dialogue, canceled missions, development tools, and assets tied to Rockstar's shelved single-player expansion plans.

The headline discovery so far is a reconstructed outline of the Liberty City expansion Rockstar once planned for GTA 5 before scrapping it. TJGM built the outline using shoreline data found in the files, and the resulting map looks noticeably bigger than the Liberty City players explored in GTA 4. The files reportedly also contain shoreline audio zones and a development zone suggesting Rockstar had started laying out additional terrain, hinting the project may have progressed further than fans previously realized.

The leak also adds detail to the long-rumored Agent Trevor DLC, which would have cast GTA 5's Trevor as a secret agent before Rockstar canceled it in favor of pouring resources into GTA Online. New interior screenshots, including a large mansion, along with mission names, descriptions, and music cues for the scrapped missions, are among the newly visible assets. Separately, TJGM shared early alternate dialogue from GTA 5's "Friend Request" mission, where Tracey watches a fictional show called "Jersey Jews" instead of the Fame or Shame content that made it into the final game.

Notably, TJGM claims the files also contain very low-quality screenshots of the GTA 6 map. That's not entirely shocking on its own -- both the GTA 5 source code and early GTA 6 material reportedly originated from the same 2022 Rockstar breach, so it tracks that remnants of both projects would sit in the same trove.

For GTA 6 fans, the more interesting wrinkle here is speculative but worth flagging: some are wondering whether Rockstar's shelved Liberty City ambitions for GTA 5 could resurface in some form down the line, possibly informing GTA 6 content given the franchise's history of recycling and revisiting locations. To be clear, that's speculation floated around the discovery, not anything confirmed by Rockstar or present in the leaked files themselves. It's also a reminder of how GTA 5's single-player side got starved once GTA Online took off commercially -- a pattern that's fueled ongoing fan discussion about how much single-player-versus-multiplayer investment GTA 6 will get after launch, especially with Take-Two having already confirmed the existing online ecosystem won't simply be shelved when the sequel arrives.

More than a decade after GTA 5 launched, its buried development history is still being unearthed piece by piece. With GTA 6's release window closing in, leaks like this one serve as an odd bit of counter-programming -- pulling attention backward toward what could have been, even as anticipation builds for what's coming next.
