Quick-Time Pit Stops: How Refueling Could Actually Work in GTA 6

Running out of gas while the cops are on your tail sounds like a nightmare -- and that might be exactly the point Rockstar is going for.
GameSpot has dug into one of the more divisive details to surface from recent GTA 6 previews: the idea that players will need to actually refuel their vehicles. According to the outlet, the game will feature at least two categories of vehicles -- gas-powered and electric -- with hybrids a possibility that hasn't been confirmed. Charging will handle EVs, while gas-powered cars reportedly use a quick-time event lasting around 10 seconds, where players hold down R2 or RB to pump fuel until the tank is full.
The wrinkle, per GameSpot, is what happens when you're driving a stolen car. Needing to make a detour to a gas station becomes a real liability if you're trying to flee a scene, and it gets worse if you're already carrying a Wanted level. In other words, the mechanic isn't just busywork -- it's being framed as a system with actual stakes attached to it.
GameSpot frames this as part of a larger pattern of realism Rockstar has been layering into GTA 6, pointing to previously reported mechanics like relationship systems, working out, and more involved police evasion. Refueling fits that same mold: a mundane real-world task turned into a design lever that shapes player behavior.
That behavioral shift is really the interesting part for longtime fans. In past GTA games, there was zero cost to abandoning a car the moment you spotted something cooler on the street -- vehicles were disposable. If GameSpot's reporting holds up, spending money and time keeping a car fueled could make players noticeably more attached to -- and protective of -- their rides, turning car theft and getaways into a more deliberate, resource-conscious loop rather than a disposable one.
It's worth noting none of this is officially confirmed by Rockstar in the excerpt GameSpot is working from -- the details are still described as not concrete. But if accurate, it lines up with the broader direction fans have been tracking across other GTA 6 previews: a Leonida that asks players to manage more systems simultaneously, from relationships to physical upkeep to now, apparently, keeping an eye on the fuel gauge.
