New Zealand unlocks GTA 6 before anywhere else on Earth, and some fans are seriously weighing a transoceanic flight just to play it a few hours early -- but PS5 owners face a much messier path than their Xbox counterparts.

GameSpot published a tongue-in-cheek but surprisingly detailed guide this week for players considering flying to New Zealand to play GTA 6 ahead of the rest of the world. Rockstar has confirmed the game unlocks at midnight local time on November 19, 2026, in New Zealand, which puts Kiwi players well ahead of players in the Americas and Europe thanks to time zone differences.

The catch, according to the outlet, is that this head start is far easier for Xbox Series X|S owners to exploit than PS5 owners. Microsoft allows players to simply change their console's region, but Sony permanently locks a PSN account to the region it was created in. That means a traveling PS5 owner would need to create an entirely new PSN account registered to New Zealand and purchase the game using New Zealand Dollar gift cards from a third-party key retailer -- a workaround GameSpot itself flags as not exactly safe.

For anyone still tempted, the guide lays out the logistics: flying out of Los Angeles or San Francisco after preloading at home, landing in Auckland roughly 13 hours later with a 21-hour time shift in your favor, and bringing the PS5 as carry-on rather than checked luggage to avoid damage, theft, or confiscation. It also notes practical snags like New Zealand's Type I power sockets, TSA screening requirements for the console, and the need to carry the DualSense separately due to its battery -- plus a reminder that most hotel TVs won't exactly show off the game at its best.

For context, this isn't the first time GTA 6's staggered rollout has generated this kind of workaround chatter -- earlier reporting has already covered how preload windows and regional unlock times are being tracked closely by fans eager to shave hours off the wait, and how some are hunting for cheaper ways into the game through gift card discounts and regional pricing quirks. The New Zealand trip is really an extreme extension of that same impulse, just with a plane ticket attached instead of a coupon code.

Practically speaking, the math here is lopsided: a flight, lodging, and a new PSN account setup just to gain a few hours over players who stay home and simply wait for their own region's midnight unlock. GameSpot's own writer ultimately concedes as much, suggesting most fans would be better served treating this as a fun thought experiment -- or, at most, an excuse for a New Zealand vacation -- rather than an actual day-one strategy.
