K9 Units Join Vice City's Police Toolkit, Edge Preview Reveals

Outrunning a cruiser won't be enough anymore -- Vice City's finest are bringing German Shepherds to the chase, and getting caught by one looks a lot more painful than a pair of handcuffs.
Edge Magazine published a hands-on preview of GTA 6 featuring Rockstar's Rob Nelson at the controls, and it revealed a new wrinkle in the game's police response: cops can now call in K9 units to track down fleeing suspects. In the demoed sequence, Jason and Lucia wipe out on their motorcycle while trying to evade police and attempt to flee on foot, only for a nearby German Shepherd to catch Jason and pin him to the ground.
Per Edge, Rockstar developers watching the session specifically asked Nelson not to shoot the dog during the demo -- a small aside that strongly suggests the option to do so exists in the first place. That would be consistent with GTA 5, where dogs could be shot and killed, so it wouldn't be a huge surprise if that grim option carries over. It's worth stressing that none of this has been explicitly confirmed by Rockstar itself; it's an inference based on how the preview played out and what series precedent suggests.
This isn't the first we've heard about GTA 6's dogs. Previous reporting already established that players will be able to pet or scold dogs in the game, and the series' love of canine detail even made it into a recent South Park crossover clip showing Jason flinging and re-collecting dog poop as a weapon. Taken together, it's clear Rockstar is treating animals, dogs especially, as a more interactive and systemic part of the world rather than background scenery.
The K9 reveal also slots neatly into everything we've learned about GTA 6's overhauled police AI. The game is set to feature a six-star Wanted system, an expanded criminal profile system that casts a wider net for tracking players down, CCTV footage that can be destroyed to erase evidence, and cops who remember specific outfits worn during a crime. Dogs appear to be another layer in that same philosophy: evasion in GTA 6 won't just mean losing a star rating, it'll mean out-thinking a police force that remembers faces, clothes, and now has dogs capable of running suspects down on foot.
For players, the practical takeaway is that the days of ditching a vehicle and sprinting into an alley to shake a Wanted level may not work the way they used to. With smarter AI, memory of clothing, and now K9 units in the mix, successfully evading the law in Vice City looks like it will require genuine strategy rather than muscle memory from GTA 5. With launch set for November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, details like this are shaping up to be a meaningful part of how differently GTA 6 plays on the ground compared to its predecessor.
