GameSpot's Cheap Week investigation breaks down why consoles keep getting pricier while, adjusted for inflation, top games are actually historically cheap -- with GTA 6's $80 price tag caught in the middle of it all.

A new GameSpot feature, part of the outlet's "Cheap Week" series, digs into why gaming hardware has become so expensive and argues it's not one single cause but a pile-up of pressures hitting at once. Analyst Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics told GameSpot that tariffs imposed under the Trump administration, a severe AI-driven shortage of RAM and storage components (dubbed "RAMageddon"), and a broken console business model have combined to push prices upward with no relief in sight.

According to the report, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma described a "hardware component crisis" in which storage costs for Microsoft have more than doubled since early 2026 and are expected to roughly quintuple compared to two years ago by this holiday season. GameSpot notes the traditional strategy of selling consoles at a loss and recouping money through games and accessories no longer works when components are this expensive, effectively breaking what Elliott called "the whole economic engine of the console business."

The piece also highlights that while hardware prices have soared -- the PS5 digital edition jumping from $400 to $600, Xbox Series X|S rising over $200, and the Switch 2 headed to $500 -- game prices haven't risen nearly as much when adjusted for inflation. GameSpot points out that Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick has argued major releases are actually cheaper today in real dollars than past blockbusters like GTA 5 or Super Mario 64 once inflation is factored in. Still, GTA 6's upcoming $80 price tag is cited as part of a broader shift, alongside titles like Mario Kart World and Elden Ring on Switch 2, toward a new pricing tier for big-budget releases.

Looking ahead, the report cites experts who don't expect the squeeze on memory and components to ease soon, with SK Hynix reportedly warning that 2027 could be the worst year yet for supply. GameSpot suggests this crunch is a major reason Sony may be rethinking or delaying its next PlayStation, and why Microsoft says it's rethinking its entire approach to Project Helix. Despite all this, the outlet notes gaming overall isn't shrinking -- cheaper indie hits and subscription bundles are reportedly keeping the hobby affordable for many, even as premium hardware and top-tier games drift further out of reach for casual spenders.
