Physical Copies of GTA 6 Not Off the Table, Despite Digital-First Plan

Even though GTA 6 will ship without a disc, Take-Two hasn't fully closed the door on a physical release down the line, according to remarks from its top executive.
In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the possibility of a disc-based version of GTA 6, noting that while it "doesn't really make sense for the consumer" given today's connected gaming landscape, the company isn't ruling it out entirely. Zelnick pointed out that more than 90% of Take-Two's sales are already digital, and that most modern games require an internet connection regardless of format.
As it stands, GTA 6 will not ship on a physical disc, though retail buyers will still be able to purchase a boxed copy containing a redemption code. When asked directly whether Take-Two might revisit a disc release for the game in the future, Zelnick kept the door open, saying, "I wouldn't rule out anything at this stage of the game," while adding that current plans reflect what's right for now rather than a permanent decision.
According to GameSpot's report, Zelnick doesn't anticipate any financial downside to going digital-only with GTA 6, and suggested the approach could actually boost Take-Two's earnings. He also predicted that gaming as a whole will continue trending toward near-total digital adoption, though he compared the shrinking physical market to vinyl records in the music industry, a small but persistent niche.
Zelnick was careful to clarify that the digital-focused strategy for GTA 6 was determined independently, based on what made sense for the game itself, rather than being a response to Sony's previously announced plan to discontinue physical disc support starting in January 2028. GTA 6 remains on track for its November 19 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at an $80 price point.
