Minimalist HUD Design Sparks a Split Reaction Among Players Poring Over Footage

A stripped-down health bar and minimap have some fans calling GTA 6's interface refreshingly clean -- and others calling it a placeholder that shipped by mistake.

A debate has broken out among fans over the on-screen interface visible in recently released Grand Theft Auto 6 footage, according to Kotaku. At issue is whether the game's HUD -- the minimap, health and armor indicators, and other on-screen elements -- reads as clean and modern, or as an unfinished placeholder that Rockstar simply hasn't gotten around to polishing.

Kotaku frames the disagreement as a genuine split rather than a pile-on: some players appreciate the pared-back look as a deliberate, minimalist design choice that keeps the screen uncluttered and lets Leonida's world take center stage. Others in the same threads argue the opposite, describing the UI as looking "undercooked" or cheap compared to the fidelity on display everywhere else in the footage.

It's worth remembering that GTA 6 is not out yet, and any UI glimpsed in trailers or extended-look footage this far ahead of release is inherently a snapshot in time rather than a finished product. Rockstar has historically iterated heavily on interface design between marketing showcases and launch -- GTA 5's HUD, for instance, went through visible changes across its own promotional cycle. Judging a final UI off pre-release clips has burned fan speculation before.

This particular controversy also lands in the context of the flood of extended-look material that's been dissected clip by clip in recent weeks, from Digital Foundry's frame-rate analysis to fans cataloguing side content and easter eggs hidden in the footage. UI design is a smaller, more subjective piece of that same scrutiny -- unlike frame rate or draw distance, there's no objective benchmark for whether a minimap "looks good," which is likely why opinions are splitting so cleanly down the middle.

For players, the practical stakes are fairly low for now: HUD elements are typically among the most customizable and most frequently patched aspects of a modern open-world game, and Rockstar has offered HUD toggles and scaling options in past titles. Whether this particular design sticks, gets refined, or turns out to be an early build artifact likely won't be clear until closer to launch.
