Clicking the Stick Finally Replaces Button-Mashing to Sprint

One of the most nagging control quirks in GTA history may finally be gone -- and it's not a big flashy feature, just a button you won't have to mash anymore.

A new report from GameSpot suggests Rockstar is finally ditching one of the Grand Theft Auto series' longest-running annoyances: the sprint control. For years, GTA games have required players to hold or repeatedly mash a face button to run, a scheme that always felt out of step with how most other games handle movement. According to footage shared by Italian YouTuber MikeShowSha, GTA 6 will instead let players sprint simply by clicking the left analog stick, the same input used in the vast majority of modern console games.

It sounds like a small thing, and in the grand scheme of a game promising a map three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2, a Criminal Profile system, a physical-fitness mechanic, and even throwable dog poop, it arguably is. But for anyone who has spent years developing sore thumbs from mashing a button just to jog down a street in Los Santos, this is the kind of change that gets felt in every single session, not just noticed once and forgotten.

It's also notable because it signals Rockstar is willing to modernize baseline mechanics that have gone largely untouched since the PS2 era, even as the series carried them forward through GTA 4 and GTA 5. Other long-running franchises, like Halo, have made similar control adjustments over time, though those games typically kept the old scheme as an optional legacy setting for veteran players. The GameSpot report doesn't mention whether GTA 6 will offer that same kind of toggle, so it remains to be seen if longtime fans who are used to the old button-mash method will have a choice or be forced to adapt.

Taken alongside other recent control and UI details that have surfaced from GTA 6 footage -- including debates over its minimalist HUD -- this sprint change fits a broader pattern of Rockstar quietly rethinking how the game feels to actually play, not just how it looks. With a November 19 release date on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S rapidly approaching, these are exactly the kinds of granular, moment-to-moment details that will shape first impressions when millions of players pick up a controller on day one. A smoother, more intuitive sprint input won't sell the game on its own, but it's the sort of quality-of-life fix that could quietly make GTA 6 feel noticeably better in the hand than its predecessors.
