GTA 6 doesn't just need to sell well -- it's being measured against three of gaming's biggest launches ever, and the money being thrown around is staggering.

With GTA 6 set to launch November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, GameSpot has laid out the specific sales benchmarks the game is expected to chase down. GTA 5 pulled in $800 million in its first 24 hours and $1 billion over three days back in 2013, and has since sold more than 230 million copies. Red Dead Redemption II opened with $725 million in its first weekend in 2018. And outside Rockstar entirely, Bethesda's Fallout 4 shipped 12 million copies on launch day alone in 2015, worth more than $750 million. Those three numbers are now the bar GTA 6 has to clear to be considered a true record-breaker rather than just another massive hit.

The projections suggest it's on track to do exactly that. Sensor Tower's GTA 6 tracker estimated 6.08 million preorders through October 13, worth roughly $594 million, split 74/26 in favor of PS5 over Xbox. Sensor Tower analyst Karl Kontus has floated a figure as high as 25 million preorders by launch, which would translate to around $2 billion in revenue -- enough, he noted, to cover the game's development budget and most of its marketing spend before a single disc or download sells through a storefront on day one. Kontus also expects the bulk of those preorders to land in the final week before release, as hype peaks.

Take-Two itself has been notably tight-lipped. CEO Strauss Zelnick has declined to share hard preorder numbers, arguing that preorders aren't technically sales since they can be canceled, and that raw figures "could be misleading" to investors without historical context for a launch of this size. He has said GTA 6 preorders "vastly" surpassed internal expectations and that "no one's ever seen anything like this before at Take-Two, or in the industry," without putting a number on it. That caution lines up with Zelnick's well-documented reluctance to declare victory on anything before it's locked in.

It's worth remembering this launch is happening in a fundamentally different console market than GTA 5's. That game hit at the tail end of the PS3/Xbox 360 era, riding a combined install base north of 150 million units before also being re-released on PS4, Xbox One, and eventually PS5 and Xbox Series X|S -- a multi-generation tail that padded its 230-million lifetime total over more than a decade. GTA 6 is launching into a console base of roughly 120 million PS5 and Xbox Series X|S units combined, at a higher price point ($80 base game, versus GTA 5's $60), with no confirmed PC version yet despite recent reports suggesting one could arrive sooner than expected. Whether GTA 6 can match GTA 5's long-run total may hinge less on launch week and more on how aggressively Rockstar expands GTA 6 into new platforms and a next-generation GTA Online down the line, something Take-Two has only hinted at so far.

For fans, the practical takeaway is less about bragging rights and more about what comes next: a launch this big gives Take-Two enormous incentive to keep investing in GTA 6 for years, whether that's the eventual PC port, console generation ports, or a beefed-up online mode. The sales conversation happening now is effectively a preview of how Rockstar and Take-Two will frame and monetize the game long after November 19.
