Why Migrating Millions of GTA Online Players Won't Be Simple, According to a Former Valve Developer

Rockstar has stayed almost entirely silent on GTA 6's multiplayer plans -- and a developer who helped build Steam says that silence is masking a genuinely thorny problem.

Chet Faliszek, a longtime Valve developer, has weighed in on one of the biggest open questions surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6: what actually happens to GTA Online when the sequel arrives. As GameSpot reports, Faliszek points out that Rockstar is stuck between two bad options. GTA Online remains an enormous, consistent revenue source for Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive, but the studio also presumably wants players to eventually move over to whatever online mode GTA 6 offers.

The complication, according to Faliszek, is that GTA Online's player base is deeply entrenched. Years of progress, purchases, and habit have built up around the current game, and GTA 5 itself has been sold at steep discounts or given away outright through various promotions, making it an easy, low-cost option for newcomers to keep piling into. Convincing that entire ecosystem to abandon ship for a new online mode isn't something that happens just because a sequel exists.

Faliszek's framing is blunt: Rockstar can either force a clean break by shutting down the old service, or try to win players over gradually and risk failure if they don't move. Neither path is without pain, and as GameSpot notes, whichever direction Rockstar picks, some portion of the community will be unhappy.

What's notable is how little Rockstar has actually said on this front. Every piece of marketing and messaging to date -- the trailers, the screenshots, the recent chatter about hunting, fishing, crime systems, and car theft mechanics -- has been framed strictly around the single-player campaign starring Jason and Lucia. There has been no official word on what GTA 6 Online looks like, whether it launches alongside the base game, or how it relates to the existing GTA Online economy at all.

That silence is worth watching closely as November 19 approaches. If Rockstar intends to run GTA 6 Online as a separate experience sitting alongside GTA Online, as Faliszek suggests is one possible route, that would let existing players keep their invested time and purchases untouched while a new mode builds an audience organically. But it also risks splitting attention and resources at exactly the moment Rockstar needs its live-service machine running at full strength. Given how central GTA Online's revenue has reportedly been to Take-Two's business, this isn't a minor logistical detail -- it's arguably the single biggest unresolved piece of the GTA 6 puzzle right now, and Rockstar's continued quiet on the subject only raises the stakes for whatever announcement eventually comes.
