What started as a single minute-long clip of Jason shooting hoops has snowballed into a legal and cultural saga involving subpoenas, memecoins, malware, and increasingly explicit footage.
GameSpot has compiled a full chronology of the ongoing GTA 6 leak saga, tracing it back to infrastructure that Reddit sleuths believe was registered as early as August 14, 2026 -- days before the first footage ever surfaced. The group behind it, calling itself CyberLeek, began publishing material on August 18, starting with a clip of protagonist Jason Duval playing basketball outside his oceanside home and showing off a "Focus" HUD mechanic.
From there, the leaks escalated quickly. Within days, CyberLeek released footage of road-rage encounters, a taser break-in, a police chase involving a six-star wanted level, and a stitched-together map of the city of Leonida that mapping communities say lines up with years of reconstructed marketing details. The group also published a set of "commandments" objecting to digital preorders and fake single-player DLC, and launched a $CYBERLEEK memecoin used to run fan polls that determine which footage gets released next -- a plane video, a hypercar clip, and a strip club scene among the results.
The situation has drawn responses well beyond the leaks themselves. Take-Two has filed subpoenas against Microsoft and Discord seeking user records in an attempt to identify those responsible, though Discord says it had not been served as of August 24. Separately, Stop Killing Games publicly distanced itself from CyberLeek's tactics and warned fans against buying into the memecoin. Fake 113GB "GTA 6" files laced with malware have also begun circulating, according to Tom's Hardware, capable of disabling Windows Defender if opened.
The most recent clips, posted August 24, show a nudist colony in Leonida along with a watermarked message asking fans whether they'd want a Lucia-led prologue -- alongside a call for supporters to gather outside Rockstar and Take-Two's offices dressed as leeks. GameSpot notes the situation remains unresolved, with CyberLeek continuing to threaten further leaks, including possible story spoilers, unless publishers change their approach to digital game sales.
