A Fourth Playable Character Was On the Table Before Jason and Lucia Won Out
Before landing on its criminal couple, Rockstar reportedly weighed expanding the cast even further than GTA 5's trio -- floating the idea of a four-protagonist structure for GTA 6.
According to IGN, Rockstar internally discussed the possibility of giving GTA 6 four playable protagonists at one point during development, a step up from the three-character format that defined GTA 5.
The report doesn't go into extensive detail on how far this idea progressed or which additional character might have joined the roster, but it frames the discussion as a genuine consideration rather than a passing joke. Ultimately, Rockstar moved away from the concept and settled on Jason and Lucia as the game's central duo.
It's a notable footnote given how much GTA 5's alternating three-protagonist system shaped that game's structure, missions, and pacing. A four-character version of GTA 6 would have presumably required an even more complex web of intersecting storylines and switch mechanics.
IGN's piece frames this as one of several paths Rockstar explored before arriving at the current setup built around Jason and Lucia's relationship. As with most pre-release development details, specifics remain limited, and Rockstar has not publicly elaborated on why the four-protagonist idea was ultimately scrapped.
