Dishonored Co-Creator Calls Rockstar's Sandbox Formula Both Inspiring and Frustrating

A veteran of the immersive sim genre says Rockstar's games are a "stab in the heart" for lacking lasting consequences -- yet he still can't wait to see what GTA 6 pulls off.

Raphaël Colantonio, who helped shape the Dishonored series at Arkane before founding WolfEye Studios, offered a candid take on the GTA franchise in comments to Press Box PR, as reported by GameSpot. He described Rockstar's games as simultaneously "the biggest tease" and "the biggest disappointment" for fans of immersive sims, praising the studio's technical polish while lamenting the genre's reliance on surface-level simulation.

Colantonio argued that GTA's mission structure -- marked by the familiar "guy with a question mark" over his head -- keeps player choices contained within isolated instances rather than letting them ripple across a persistent world. He contrasted this with Skyrim, which he said offers "just one instance of the world" where players must live with the consequences of their actions for the remainder of the game. Failing a GTA mission and simply retrying it, he added, breaks the sense of immersion he values most.

Still, Colantonio was quick to frame his comments as respectful rather than dismissive. He said he understands exactly why Rockstar makes the design choices it does, noting that deep, consequence-driven systems can confuse mainstream players and get in the way of the blockbuster set pieces GTA is known for. He likened the divide to the difference between Steven Spielberg and David Lynch -- one aiming for broad, direct appeal, the other for something more obscure and niche.

Notably, Colantonio clarified he was speaking about the GTA series in general rather than GTA 6 specifically, since Rockstar hasn't detailed whether the new game will change its approach to player choice or consequence. Even so, he said he's "really, really looking forward" to the game, curious to see how far Rockstar can push its brand of surface-level simulation. According to GameSpot, GTA 6 is set to launch November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Rockstar still planning an extended trailer reveal via Netflix on August 27.
