Why the Man Who Co-Wrote GTA's Story For Decades Still Hasn't Seen the Netflix Reveal

One of the writers most responsible for Grand Theft Auto's voice says he's deliberately keeping GTA 6's biggest reveal moment at arm's length -- because watching it might mess with his head.
Dan Houser, the longtime Rockstar co-founder and writer behind much of the Grand Theft Auto series' tone and storytelling, says he still hasn't watched GTA 6's splashy Netflix reveal, according to Kotaku. Houser reportedly explained that doing so would "distract" or "disrupt" him creatively.
Houser left Rockstar back in 2020 after years as one of the studio's defining creative voices, co-writing entries from the earlier GTA games through GTA 5. He's since gone on to found his own studio, Absurd Ventures. His comments, as reported by Kotaku, frame his avoidance of the GTA 6 Netflix moment not as indifference toward the series he helped build, but as a conscious boundary to protect his own creative process.
This is notably similar in spirit to another story making the rounds recently: GTA's former creative director has also talked about deliberately avoiding GTA 6 coverage. Taken together, these accounts suggest a pattern among some of the people who shaped GTA's earlier identity -- staying away from the new game isn't about disinterest, but about not letting someone else's vision bleed into their own ongoing work.
It's also a reminder of just how large the GTA 6 Netflix reveal loomed in the broader cultural conversation. Ampere Analysis previously estimated that the six-hour streaming window for GTA 6 footage added over 100,000 new Netflix accounts, underscoring how far outside the usual gaming press cycle this moment traveled. That a co-founder of the franchise felt he needed to actively dodge it says something about just how inescapable the coverage became for anyone even loosely connected to Rockstar.
For fans, Houser's comments don't reveal anything new about GTA 6 itself, but they do add a human dimension to the runaway hype machine surrounding the game. As preorders, merch drops, and marketing tie-ins pile up weekly, it's a small but telling detail that some of the most qualified people to have an opinion on GTA 6 are the ones choosing to look away.
