Country Icon's Passing Overshadows Trailers at Gamescom Opening Night Live
Amid trailers for Witcher 3 DLC, Silent Hill: Townfall, and stray shouts of "GTA 6!!!," Gamescom's biggest showcase moment came from outside gaming entirely.
According to GameSpot, this year's Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase delivered a packed lineup of reveals -- a closer look at upcoming Witcher 3 DLC, two PUBG spin-off announcements, new footage from Control: Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, plus a live musical performance tied to the Mewgenics soundtrack. Fans in the Twitch chat were also reportedly clamoring for a Path of Exile 2 trailer, which eventually showed up roughly 90 minutes in, alongside scattered chants of "GTA 6!!!"
But GameSpot reports that none of those reveals ended up dominating the conversation. Just minutes into the broadcast, news broke that country singer Dolly Parton had died at age 80, announced via an Instagram post from her nephew and head of security, Bryan Seaver. The hashtag #RIPDOLLY reportedly flooded the showcase's live chat and continued to do so well into the second hour of the stream.
GameSpot notes that Parton's ties to gaming were minimal -- some casino game appearances, a 2020 Words With Friends collaboration, two songs featured in 2009's Pop'n Music for Wii, and her own pinball machine back in 1979. Even so, tributes to her kept surfacing throughout the showcase, seemingly outpacing excitement for any single trailer.
In his announcement, Seaver described Parton as having "farmed songs and happiness" the way her father farmed soil, noting she'd become part of fans' lives through television, records, and playlists "whether you liked it or not." GameSpot frames the outpouring as proof of just how far Parton's cultural reach extended -- enough to briefly steal the spotlight from a gaming showcase held an ocean away from her Tennessee home, where her family says she passed peacefully.
